A talented volleyball team competed in friday's Virginia Tech Classic with a 3-0 sweep of Norflok State . Where shee will show her talent. Senior Sarah Mishroom also joined the all-tournament squad for her efforts on the court this week. 

"I'm really proud of the way we responded today ." said head coach Sarah Rumley Noble .  We worked really hard and were locked in . We hada a great pre-confrence segment of play and I can't wait to get started in league play."

Senior McCall Denny posted her second double-double of the tournament, leading the team in the kills (14) and notching 10 digis. Fellow senior Sam Bickley also recorded a double-doule with 19 assists and 11 digs. Freshman Maya Winterhoff led the team in aces and blocks, totaling fouer each. Freshman Kenady Roper led the team in digs with 13. 

App State outpaced Norfolk State in points (50-34), kills (39-26), aces (6-3), assists (37-24), and digs (54-40). The Mountainneers matched the Spartans in blocks with five apiece. 

The Mountaineers took thr first set, 25-18. The Black and Gold went point for point with Norfolk State until they were able to break away from a 12-12 tie, scoring three consecutive points of all kills from Missroom and Denny and a Sparton error. The Mountainners distanced themselves more with two more three-point runs that included kills from sophommore Lulu Ambrose and Winterhoff, a block from the duo of junior  Meghan  Dombrowsi and Winterhoff, and an ace from Bickley, to lead 22-16. An error from the Spartans and an ace from Winterhoff closed out the first set. 


Trailing early in the second set, App State caught up to the Spartans, 4-4, with a kill from junior Madison Baldridge. Down by one (8-7), the Mountaineers went on a five-point run to take the lead,11-8. The Black and Gold went on another run, racking up six unanswered points with kills from Ambrose, Winterhoff and Denny to lead 17-10. Denny posted four kills within the 6-0 run, three of which were Consecutive. Up 21-17 , App state posted three more consecutive points from a Spartan error, a block from Baldridge and Winterhoff, and a kill from Ambrose. A kill from Baldridge capped the set, 25-19. 

In the third and final set, App State came out hot, posting a 6-0 run right of the bat, to lead 6-1. The Mountaineers' mommentum carried them to four more consecutive points, Which included a kill from Denny and two services aces from winterhoff , to extend their lead to 10-4. The Mountaineers posted three-three point runs to push the score to 23-11. Denny posted another kill to make the score 24-12 before the Spartans went on a three-point run of their own, but it wasn't enough to overtake the Mountaineers' commanding lead. App State took the third set, 25-15.


App State will open confrence action with a pair of matches against new SBC member, James Madison. The first match will take place Sept.23 at 6.p.m. and the second will be Sept.24 at 1 p.m.
